I haven’t been on tumblr in months, but I’ve felt the need to say something that’s too long to rant about on Twitter and too much of a touchy issue to post on Facebook.
Jared Leto in Dallas Buyers Club.
Now I’ll admit, I have not seen the movie yet. But based on what I have read on the internet, neither have at least half of those who are posting awful things about him.
Let me start with this: Jared Leto is an ACTOR. He is hired to play characters that were already created and lines that were already written by SOMEONE ELSE. So the fact that people are saying he is a terrible person and “dehumanized” transgender people is absolutely ridiculous. He never said a single word against that community. He never “dehumanized” them. He simply played the role that he was hired to play, and from what I’ve heard, he played it well enough to earn him an Oscar.
Yes, a transgender person could have been hired. But why would directors hire actors that are similar to the characters? That’s not what actors do. Their job is to perform. Their job is to bring people to life that don’t really exist. Their job is to ACT.
Also, why would anyone be angry over the speech he gave? What, he didn’t specifically point out the transgender community by name? He made a general statement, and that’s somehow insulting to you? How is this statement in any way “offensive?” Please message me and let me know if you have a valid reason why it is offensive.
"…To anyone who has ever felt injustice for who you are and who you love…tonight I stand in front of the world for you."
It was an inspirational speech, and apparently an inspirational film to many people. So calm the fuck down and stop thinking everything and everyone is out to get you. Just because people don’t specifically mention you does not mean they are discriminating you. Just because people don’t know exactly how you feel does not mean they don’t have sympathy for your feelings. And finally, just because someone plays a role in a film, and their character happens to be similar to you, does NOT mean they are dehumanizing or humiliating you.
Ellen hosting the Oscars
“He’d walk onto the set in the morning, after, like, a half hour’s sleep or something, and that face— it took your breath away. I just looked at him, having been through hair and makeup for hours, and wailed, ‘You fucker!’ He just practically rolled out of bed and looked that gorgeous. He can’t take compliments, absolutely hates them, and he goes, ‘Shut up!’ and gets me in a headlock and wrestles me to the ground. I love him dearly.”
